Grateful Space is a small gathering
for those who are drawn to a more meaningful way of living.

We come together
in gratitude, compassion, and shared humanity.

Human Flourishing

Grateful Space
(Grateful Gathering)

Would you like to explore a sense of wonder
and a fresh awareness of the world around us?

We are a community rooted in gratitude and compassion.

Here, we connect more deeply—listening to one another,
sharing what lives in our hearts,
and learning to be grateful in each present moment.

Together, we flourish.

§ Grateful Gathering and Br.David

Brother David Steindl-Rast, who celebrates his 100th year in 2026, is an Austrian-born Benedictine monk.

Holding doctorates in anthropology and philosophy, he has devoted his life to dialogue and practice across religious and cultural boundaries.

He is known as one of the first Catholic monastics to be officially permitted to engage in dialogue with Buddhist monks.Deeply committed to Zen practice, he has also been active in movements for peace, including the Vietnam War protests and United Nations-related initiatives.Over the years, his circle of dialogue has included leading spiritual and cultural figures such as Dalai Lama, Thich Nhat Hanh, Thomas Merton, and Desmond Tutu.

Around twenty years ago, Brother David articulated a quiet yet powerful vision:
That people would gather in small circles, learning, practicing, and sharing a life of gratefulness together.

He believed that such networks of individuals and small communities could gently nurture a world grounded not in division or domination, but in reflection, connection, and care.

Today, this vision is being lived out in Grateful Gathering communities around the world, taking root in the fabric of everyday life.

Each month, we explore a different theme, deepening our understanding together through dialogue and shared reflection.
(Examples of themes: awe, embracing imperfection, and navigating grief.)

As we rest into moments of dialogue and silence, each participant—and the group as a whole—gradually begins to move toward a more meaningful way of living.

The materials we use are drawn from essays, poetry, artwork, and video created by writers and artists from around the world, as well as from fields such as psychology.

This is an open space where people of diverse faiths and spiritual backgrounds—as well as those who do not identify with any religion—come together to share a sense of gratitude and the wonder of life, and to listen to one another in stillness.
