Spiritual Ecology & Laudato Si’ Movement

Spiritual Ecology

Spiritual Ecology is an emerging field that brings together ecology and spirituality. It recognizes that the environmental crisis is not only a scientific or political problem, but also a spiritual one. At its heart lies the understanding that the Earth is sacred — that all of life is interconnected and that our relationship with the natural world must be based on reverence, care, and responsibility.

Spiritual Ecology invites us to look deeply into the roots of ecological destruction — such as separation, greed, and forgetfulness — and to rediscover a sense of belonging within the living Earth. It encourages inner transformation as well as outer action: living with gratitude, simplicity, and compassion toward all beings.

Through this perspective, caring for the Earth becomes not just an ethical duty, but a form of spiritual practice — a way of remembering who we truly are and where we come from.

Laudato Si’

Laudato Si’ has become an important guidepost within the expanding horizon of Spiritual Ecology. Through this encyclical and his addresses surrounding the 2015 Paris Climate Conference, Pope Francis powerfully called the world to see the Earth not merely as a resource, but as a sacred community to which we belong and within which we live together. In recent years, many cultures and wisdom traditions have been deepening the understanding that the well-being of the human heart and the well-being of the Earth cannot be separated, and Laudato Si’ resonates deeply with this growing awareness.

At the heart of the document is the vision of “Integral Ecology” — the understanding that environmental, social, economic, and spiritual realities are all interconnected parts of one living whole. It also presents “Ecological Conversion,” an inner transformation that nurtures gratitude, simplicity, and compassionate care for the Earth.

Although rooted in the Catholic tradition, its message is gently open to all who seek to live in harmony with the Earth.
